Rising from the ashes of war after war with stubborn optimism, right now, Vietnam is at the centre of tourism. Endless fields of lush green paddy, long stretches of powdery beach, thick forests and soaring mountains, basket boats and conical hats, water buffaloes and motorcycles, palaces and pagodas, Vietnam is as exotic as it gets. To get under Vietnamese skin, read Bao Ninh's 'The Sorrow of War', Watch Barry Levinson’s 'Good morning Vietnam!', and listen to contemporary pop by Khanh Ly.
